Boost your immunity and mood with our gut-friendly high fibre healthy breakfast cereals

They say you are what you eat or rather you are what you feed the trillions of little critters that live in your gut.

The lining of your gut is covered in microscopic creatures called bacteria which create a micro-ecosystem called the microbiome. Although we don’t really notice it’s there it plays a key role in your health

Having a wide variety of these good bacteria in your gut can enhance your immune system function, improve symptoms of depression, help combat obesity, and provide numerous other benefits.

Not surprisingly, what you feed your microbiome may have the biggest impact on its health. Therefore the healthier it is, the healthier you are. The key to a healthy microbiome is maintaining a balance among the nearly 1,000 different species of bacteria in your gut.

There are two ways to maintain this balance — by feeding the microbes the foods they like namely prebiotic’s and probiotic’s.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are found in many seeds, fruits and vegetables, especially those that contain complex carbohydrates, such as fibre and resistant starch.

These carbs aren’t digestible by your body, so they pass through the digestive system to become food for the bacteria and other microbes.

Two Birds breakfast toppers provide prebiotics in the form of chia, buckwheat, & hemp seeds. They act like fertilizers that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.

Probiotics

Probiotics contain live organisms, usually specific strains of bacteria that add to the population of healthy microbes in your gut.

As with prebiotics, you can take probiotics through food. The most common probiotic food is yogurt, which is made by fermenting milk with different bacteria which are left in the final product. Other bacteria-fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kombucha and kimchi, are also good sources of probiotics.

There’s never been a better time to provide your gut with prebiotics and probiotics.  The NHS recommends 30g of fibre per day for an adult. Two tablespoons of Two Birds toppers will provide you with 22% of the daily-recommended amount. Go on try one of our Two Birds toppers, which are full of soluble and prebiotic fibre to feed those little critters in your gut and boost your immunity, your mood and your general health.
